The Magic of Ukrainian Easter is an illustrated talk exploring the meaning and traditions of Ukrainian Easter through storytelling, visuals, and live demonstrations. Participants learn about key rituals and symbols—from the Easter basket and Holy Week practices to songs, blessings, and foods—culminating in a guided tasting of traditional Easter dishes.

The talk is led by Karen Pidskalny, an educator and cultural researcher with decades of experience interpreting Ukrainian religious and folk traditions in Canada.

Discover the meaning, beauty, and spirit of Ukrainian Easter in this illustrated talk. The Magic of Ukrainian Easter explores centuries-old traditions and rituals that make Easter the most cherished celebration in Ukrainian culture, blending religious practice with lived custom and sensory experience.

Through storytelling, visual examples, and live demonstrations, participants will: learn about the symbolism of the Ukrainian Easter basket and its traditional contents; explore the significance of Pussy Willow Sunday, the Twelve Gospels, and the laying of the shroud; encounter the songs, blessings, scents, and ritual practices of Holy Week; and enjoy a guided tasting of traditional Ukrainian Easter foods, with each item introduced in its cultural and symbolic context

About the host: Karen Pidskalny is a lifelong educator, researcher, and cultural interpreter. She has spent decades studying and sharing Ukrainian religious customs, folk practices, and seasonal rituals, with particular attention to how these traditions were preserved and adapted in the Canadian context.
