On Thursday evening, the Ukrainian Museum of Canada in Saskatoon welcomes audiences to the opening reception and special screening of Horizons of Belonging.
The documentary follows four Ukrainian families in Edmonton and Calgary over the course of a year as they rebuild their lives after fleeing Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Through intimate and deeply personal stories, the film explores resilience, identity, and what it means to find belonging in a new country.
After the screening, stay for a live Q&A with co-director Steven Brese — an Edmonton-based filmmaker and visual storyteller who previously worked in Ukrainian television in Kyiv. Steven is passionate about sharing stories that connect communities and recently released Silent Courage, a multilingual documentary featuring Ukrainian Deaf newcomers to Canada.
Admission is free or by donation, everyone welcome!
Horizons of Belonging
What does it mean to be a Ukrainian newcomer in Alberta? A film crew followed four Ukrainian families over a year in Edmonton and Calgary as they navigated the challenges of rebuilding their lives after Russia’s full-scale invasion.
Horizons of Belonging is a deeply personal exploration of identities, displacement and belonging, shedding light on what it means to be a modern Ukrainian, and ‘start over’ in a new country.
Directed by Steven Brese and Oleksandr Pankieiev.
