In this short talk, Dr. Zhuravlov will examine how the memory of Babyn Yar—a site of Nazi mass killings in Kyiv—has been shaped over time by political regimes, community voices, and shifting narratives. Who holds the power to shape memory?

Welcoming Dr. Yaroslav Zhuravlov
The Ukrainian Museum of Canada is pleased to welcome Dr. Yaroslav Zhuravlov as our researcher-in-residence in the Library and Archives throughout May.
Dr. Zhuravlov is a Ukrainian historian specializing in East European studies, including the history of Ukraine and the Soviet Union, Jewish history, genocide, and memory studies. He is currently a postdoctoral fellow at the Imre Kertész Kolleg, Friedrich Schiller University in Jena, Germany, where he is working on Eastern European Debates of the Holocaust in Exile and Emigration.
He earned his PhD in 2019 from the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. His dissertation explored political communication and daily life in the late Soviet period. He has held research roles at the Institute of History of Ukraine (Kyiv) and Bielefeld University, where he worked on Babyn Yar 1944–2022: A Contested Memory Landscape.

Український музей Канади радий вітати д-ра Ярослава Журавльова як дослідника-резидента у Бібліотеці та Архіві протягом травня.
Д-р Журавльов — історик, що досліджує історію України, СРСР, єврейську історію, геноциди та пам’ять. Нині він постдокторант Імре Кертес Коллеґу, університет Фрідріха Шиллера (Єна, Німеччина), де працює над проєктом Східноєвропейські дебати про Голокост в еміграції та вигнанні.
У 2019 році він захистив кандидатську дисертацію у НАН України, присвячену політичній комунікації та повсякденню в пізньорадянський період. Досліджував тему Бабиного Яру як простору пам’яті у проєкті Babyn Yar 1944–2022, працюючи в Інституті історії України та Університеті Білефельда.
