Join acclaimed musician and ethnomusicologist Brian Cherwick for a fascinating excursion through the world of Ukrainian folk music. A presentation featuring more than 40 traditional string, wind, and percussion instruments, Cherwick will explore genres as diverse as the epic songs of blind bards, shepherds’ tunes from the Carpathian Mountains, ancient ritual melodies, and even a taste of transplanted Ukrainian music as it has evolved on the Canadian prairies.

Among his instruments are the kobza (plucked lute), lira (hurdy gurdy), tsymbaly (hammered dulcimer), duda (goatskin bagpipe). This performance is a unique blend of entertainment and education, spiced with humour.

Brian Cherwick is a multi-instrumentalist who has performed worldwide as a soloist, with various folk ensembles, and as leader of the award-winning speed-folk group Kubasonics. He also holds a Ph.D. in Ukrainian Folklore and Ethnomusicology from the University of Alberta.
