Mini-Exhibition for The First Métis Man of Odesa
October 11–29, 2023 – On view at Persephone Theatre

From October 11 to 29, the Ukrainian Museum of Canada will collaborate with Persephone Theatre as it hosts a new play, The First Métis Man of Odesa. During the play’s run, the Persephone Theatre’s Pomegranate Gallery located on their second level will feature a curated display of artifacts drawn from the Museum’s collection. The theatre’s gallery will feature carefully chosen treasures from the museum’s permanent collection, including woodcut prints by Vitaliy Lytvyn, intricately woven kylymy (carpets) and poyasy (belts), as well a beautifully written pysanka, its intricate patterns a tribute to Odesa’s heritage.

The play tells the poignant, real-life saga of a Ukrainian woman and a Métis man in a tumultuous long-distance relationship, in a world gripped by pandemic and against the harrowing backdrop of Russia’s illegal foray into Ukraine.
