Lecture: The Transformation of Education in Ukraine

A talk by Dr. Volodymyr Ternovksy

Popular lecturer Dr. Volodymyr Ternovsky returns for an exploration of Ukraine’s educational system. All levels of the Ukrainian education system, from pre-elementary to higher education, have undergone a transformation since Ukraine gained independence in 1991. Despite significant efforts invested in its improvement and adaptation to modern standards, substantial challenges persist, particularly within the higher education system. The primary obstacle is aligning the skills of college and university graduates with the rapidly evolving requirements of the job market. This involves fostering university-business partnerships, encompassing joint research and development efforts – all projects made more challenging by the war.

Dr. Volodymyr Ternovsky left Odesa, Ukraine with his wife and children in the first days of the war. He arrived in Saskatoon in April 2022. Ternovsky holds a master’s degree in agricultural economics and a PhD in economics from Agrotechnological University in Melitopol, where he worked for 18 years. He has also been involved in the agricultural extension service, working to implement international technical assistance projects aimed at the development of small and medium-sized horticultural production.
