Conversation with Dr. Joan Borsa and Jen Budney on Dmytro Stryjek

A thought-provoking conversation with curator and writer Dr. Joan Borsa and Jen Budney, Executive Director of the Ukrainian Museum of Canada, presented in conjunction with the exhibition Dmytro Stryjek: Drawn From Memory.

During this special afternoon, we explored the life and work of beloved Ukrainian Canadian artist Dmytro Stryjek, while reflecting on how “folk art” is positioned within the wider artistic landscape. Through Stryjek’s example, Borsa and Budney considered how artists are often categorized by ethnicity, education, or perceived cultural authenticity, and how such labels can both elevate and limit their legacy.
