Over the years, the representation of Ukrainian identity in Saskatchewan has evolved since the first wave of immigration.
Unique craft styles have emerged as Ukrainians in Saskatchewan preserved their traditions and collaborated with other cultural groups in Canada. Everyday objects and artworks, while seemingly mundane, become significant representations of identity and daily life. For the Ukrainian diaspora in Canada, homewares and textiles often serve as touchpoints that reconnect them to their homeland.
An exhibition developed by the museum’s summer Curatorial Assistant, Rachel Ormshaw, and guest curator Serhij Koroliuk, Saskachewanshchyna is a celebration of the material culture of Ukrainian Canadians in the prairies.
Drawn from the permanent collection of the museum, the eclectic objects and artworks in Saskachewanshchyna are a testament to the vibrancy and resilience of Ukrainian culture in western Canada.
