About Myrna Kostash
Myrna Kostash, a celebrated author and winner of the 2024 Kobzar Award for her chronicle Ghosts in a Photograph, lives in Edmonton, Alberta. She has been a long-time supporter of the Ukrainian Museum of Canada, frequently visiting during her trips to Saskatoon over the years.
A Generous Gift
In 2024, Myrna made a generous $10,000 donation, a gift that reflects her deep belief in the Museum’s evolving mission. Reflecting on the difference between the way the Museum used to be and how it is now, she shares, “The exhibits were usually traditional, rooted in the first wave of Ukrainian immigration to Saskatchewan. These displays have offered generations of visitors an invaluable immersion in heritage. I’ve always been happy to support the Museum’s fundraising campaigns, but my recent, larger donation stems from the inspiration I feel about the new directions the Museum is taking.”
Myrna highlights several initiatives that excite her: “I’m enthusiastic about the intercultural programs like the Book Club, the blending of traditional arts and crafts with contemporary expressions by Ukrainian artists and writers, collaborations with institutions in Ukraine and sister museums across Canada, and the Museum’s outreach to Indigenous artists and knowledge keepers.”
The author of Bloodlines: A Journey Into Eastern Europe, Reading the River: A Traveller’s Companion to the North Saskatchewan, Frog Lake Reader, Prodigal Daughter: A Journey to Byzantium, and many other acclaimed works, Myrna also encourages others to contribute, no matter the size of the gift.
“Don’t be shy! Even modest donations make a difference—not just financially but as a public demonstration of faith in the Museum’s work.”
The Museum’s Future
When asked about the role of the Museum today and in the future, Myrna emphasizes the need for continued adaptation. “Looking ahead, the Museum must prepare for a future where multiculturalism, as we’ve known it, may no longer be taken for granted as a social good. This makes the Museum’s work all the more vital.” With a smile, she adds one more suggestion: “Open a cafe!”
The Ukrainian Museum of Canada extends its heartfelt thanks to Myrna Kostash for her incredible generosity and belief in our vision. Her support ensures that we can continue connecting people to the rich and evolving history of the Ukrainian Canadian community while embracing new opportunities for cultural dialogue and collaboration.
